JArs of Clay; How He denied Christ

I am re running  this article in view of Lead singer of the Jars of Clay, Dan Haseltine’s public statement regarding Homosexual marriage-

It was called How They Deny Christ….
(It has come to our attention that there is a new move within apostate Evangelicalism, called NALT,(Not All Like Them), in which false pastors team up with homosexual activists, to assure the ‘sodomite community’ that they are “Not all Like them”, that is like the faithful, confessing church which holds to the Christian position on marriage and sexuality. Thus they deny Christ to appeal to the enemies of Christ, at the expense of the Word of God and those willing to bear the reproach of Christ. The following is an article I wrote in February 2011 that bears repetition in view of this. There are many within the church who will not be able to resist the pressure to succumb to this denial of Christ. I pray this article arms and equips my brothers.)

Evangelical Pastor Affirms Homosexuals

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.(2 Timothy 3:1-5)

There is a frightening phenomenon that I have observed lately. I have been seeing the unhappy spectacle of young people, between their teens and early thirties, reared in the evangelical subculture, yet denying Christ.

They don’t consciously do it, I have no doubt that they don’t realise that they are denying the Saviour, but indeed they are, and in many cases with a vehemence!

The watershed for these young people is the acceptance and rejection of homosexuality.Through a distorted concept of the civil rights movement of the 1960′s , Homosexuals are now considered to be the new victims of oppression, and those who would in any way judge it as evil are now the new bigots.

In fact, we have come to the point in our post christian, paganized culture, where it is not even enough to ‘tolerate’ homosexuality, the pressure is on to become advocates of it, to champion it, and there is a new freedom for people, to hate and demean anyone who would dare call it into question.

The age group I mentioned at the beginning of the article, teens through early thirties are perhaps vulnerable for a number of reasons;

It is they who have been for the most part deliberately propagandized through our public schools, to develop ‘sensitivity’ to homosexual issues, and to question even their own sexuality, long before they have even entered puberty.

Anti bullying campaigns, and whole school days of self-imposed silence in solidarity with ‘Gay’ students have been invented by “gay activists” in order cast homosexuality into a kind of victim status, thus tapping into the natural sympathy and sense of fair play of the young.

Thus to this generation, interaction with and acceptance of homosexuals is an easy bona fide, a way to assert that ”I am compassionate, open minded, unprejudiced and much more loving than the traditional christian church”.

This is how they deny Christ. In the name of “being loving”, and “understanding” they repudiate the revelation of God given to us through Jewish Prophets and Christian apostles, without a second thought.

Our Christian sexual mores are not mere constructs of uptight pastors, priests or rabbis, they are a revelation from God!

“For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and shall cleave to his wife and they two shall be one flesh…and what God hath joined together, let no man put asunder”.

Man didn’t originate the above, that is God’s definition of marriage. Jesus cited it as being “from the beginning“, the original intent for marriage.

That revelation from heaven caused a moral earthquake in the ancient world, transforming paganism’s exhausted, debauched, rotting societies, offering a wholesome life affirming alternative. Here is how columnist Dennis Prager, who happens to be a practicing Jew describes it,

When Judaism demanded that all sexual activity be channeled into marriage, it changed the world. The Torah’s prohibition of non-marital sex quite simply made the creation of Western civilization possible. Societies that did not place boundaries around sexuality were stymied in their development. The subsequent dominance of the Western world can largely be attributed to the sexual revolution initiated by Judaism and later carried forward by Christianity.

This revolution consisted of forcing the sexual genie into the marital bottle. It ensured that sex no longer dominated society, heightened male-female love and sexuality (and thereby almost alone created the possibility of love and eroticism within marriage), and began the arduous task of elevating the status of women.

Judaism’s Sexual Revolution

But this generation dismisses that for the most part. For the cheap “holier than thou” feeling of compassion, sophistication and solidarity with an oppressed minority, ”christian” young people align themselves with the cause of homosexual marriage, at the expense of those who seek to proclaim the Word of God to this generation.

This is how they deny Jesus, and don’t even realise it.They repudiate his teaching on a very important subject, they side with a world in rebellion against God’s moral order. They don’t realise it in fact they actually believe they are being more merciful and Christlike than other christians.

Sides are being taken in this culmination of the cosmic struggle between Righteousness and unrighteousness, light and darkness, the truth and the Lie, and neutrality is impossible.

I think we need to reach our own young people because they don’t seem ready to stand for Jesus at the point where the world most resists Him.

They are confused about what Love is, but arrogantly believe they are more sophisticated and compassionate than the whole of the christian church through the centuries.

  1. Reblogged this on δοῦλος, (du•loss): one who is a slave; a bond-servant and commented:
Now the Spirit expressly says that yin later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of aliars whose consciences are seared,
    (1 Timothy 4:1-2)

As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” And Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one misleads you. “For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will mislead many.

    (Matthew 24:3-5)

In verse 5 those who deceive are NOT saying that they themselves are the Christ as it has been popularly interpreted, rather, many will come freely confessing that Jesus is the Christ and then will deceive many.

I was raised and saved in church that eventually became one of the largest in America, but has now slipped in attendance under the leadership of a pastor who claimed to love the Word of God, but refused to preach the whole counsel of Scripture. When he retired, we called a pastor who has recently invited a liberal theologian to speak in our church. The liberal is called by many an outstanding proponent of liberalism. I suspect our church may well join the downward slide into apostasy.

  3. I find it interesting how it is sexual immorality – of a very perverse kind – which is why people are turning their backs on God. When sex is more important than God, it IS their god!

Funny how all you hypocrites ignore ALL the other sins listed that you all commit each day yet continue to have this obsession with homosexuals….

Those who refuse to stand for the truth fall for the lie. This is widespread throughout the visible church. Compromise and apostasy are the order of the day and many are falling away. Thank you for the godly warning.
Homosexuality has always been a plague upon mankind. Sexual perversion is actually judgment upon men and women who refuse to worship God and give Him thanks. Since homosexuality is becoming the litmus test within the visible church today, what does that have to say about the typical church goer and their relationship to God? Praise God, when Christ returns and sets up His kingdom upon this earth the fool will no longer be esteemed and righteousness will reign under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Homosexual perverts will not be esteemed nor will they practice their sexual perversion! For the sinner will receive swift punishment under Christ’s reign. God bless you:)

Pastor Randles, thank you for this timely article. I do want to address one thing, though. My youngest child was homeschooled for 9 years. He professed Christ at 13 but turned away from the Lord in his 20’s. We cannot blame the public schools for our children turning from the Lord. It is the sinful, rebellious heart of man that turns his heart away from His Creator God. But I must say, if only the Christian couples that my son and other young people have grown up around had treasured their marriages. We moved several times over the years and so we’ve been in several churches because of that. What we saw over the years was shocking in these “Christian” homes. At the least there was a coldness and instead of an honoring of biblical marriage (Hebrews 13:4), they seemed bored or angry with their spouses. It was rare to see loving, respectful couples. At worst, we saw adultery lived out (a church elder no less) and multiple divorces. Two prominent conservative leaders in the visible church have recently been exposed as adulterers/fornicators. These were two more that we “saw” if you will, though fortunately we were not their followers. If only Christians would live as the scriptures call us to. We can cry very loudly against “homosexual marriage” but we don’t treasure marriage, or our own biblical marriages. We can protest that marriage should only be between one man and one woman, but then we fancy that we can have our adultery and our divorces at the same time. My husband and I once went to a marriage retreat put on by the premier Christian family organization that has these. Many of the sessions were nothing but a stand up comedy routine, as though laughing at marriage is somehow edifying. The teaching was of the worldly “Men are from Venus/women are from Mars” type, IOW – we are hopelessly different, let’s laugh about it, make fun of each other, and somehow, we can get by. Then they divided us up, men with men and women with women. The women learned about how to raise children. The men were put through a very difficult “get in touch with your inner child” psychological session. They were told that their fathers probably failed them and to think long and hard about how bad their childhoods were. Somehow this was supposed to make them better fathers? Somehow this was going to strengthen marriage? The kicker was that after this emotional trial was the “romantic” dinner. What a joke. Bottom line: we are hypocrites. We don’t honor marriage. We have biblical marriage as a gift from God and we have squandered it, trampled it down and despised it. God forgive us, church.

    • Eliza says:

Once we got out of the visible church, our marriage has greatly improved. The error and fleshly living found in the leadership produces error and fleshly living in the body of the church. There is very little reliance upon the Word of God, (as you attested) or upon the Holy Spirit of God. Those who attend church are not being built up on their most holy faith by faithful godly preaching and teaching from the leadership rightly dividing the Word of truth and edifying the body. Instead the emphasis is upon the latest greatest book, movie, seminar, what have you that in no way can feed the true believer and cause him/her to grow in their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and His wonderful grace. We stick with the Bible, and God is blessing us in our relationships in our family. God bless you:)

Eliza, if only it were that easy – just leave the church and all will be improved. It is possible to leave the church but still have the world in our hearts. The church instead needs to practice what she preaches. She needs to obey the Lord in faithful preaching and teaching, church discipline, and true fellowship. True fellowship is not necessarily eating together, or chatting about mundane topics as many today understand. True fellowship is being biblically equipped and willing to watch out for one another’s souls, to encourage one another, to uphold one another in prayer, to confess sins to one another, to exhort and counsel one another. We must not imagine that we are smarter than God. He told us not to forsake assembling together. (see Hebrews 10:25

    • Eliza says:

Wanting biblical fellowship and finding faithful leadership are two different things. If what is being preached by the leadership is not in accord with the Word of God then we are under no obligation to assemble with the unbelievers. I am afraid that is what much of the visible church is today. That has been my experience throughout my walk with the Lord. I remember being at a Baptist church and talking with ladies there about reading the Word of God, and they felt they couldn’t because they didn’t have anyone to explain it to them. We can read the Bible and trust the Holy Spirit to explain His Word to us. Many just do not understand that. I am not sure why. Maybe it is the teaching they receive that leads them to think that so they are dependent upon others and are not dependent upon the Lord. So if those who attend church are not in the Bible trusting the Lord to teach them, then how are they going to know if what they are being taught is in agreement with the Bible? Jesus Christ made it our duty to know the truth so that we are not deceived.

And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you: For many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. Mark 13:5-6

Every individual is held individually accountable to God for how they live before Him. If I share the truth with those around me and they reject the Word of God which is the default mode then I have showed brotherly love, but they have shown hate by not receiving the truth. I do have a blog where I try to encourage, warn, and exhort my brothers and sisters. It is what I can do at this time, until the Lord brings me into a faithful fellowship of believers who are gathered around the sound preaching and teaching of God’s Word the Bible.

What you said about the world in our hearts is correct, but if we are obedient to God and reject those who are false we are showing that the Word is written in our hearts and on our minds. The Lord will strengthen us in our resolve to please Him and serve Him alone. God bless you:)

Pastor Bill, this is a very important topic and I thank you for re-posting it. The only thing I would ask is maybe to post a follow up with a call for repentance and salvation for those who will come out of this error. Those who are in damnable error need not stay in it and suffer the wrath that awaits them. I’m thankful for pastors like you who are willing to stand fast on the Word of God, and pray that by the things that you and others publish on this topic that some would be saved.
