My friend Philip Powell, a beloved pastor, a teacher of Christ, a Father to many, a mentor and an example, has gone on to His reward in heaven. I wish to honor his memory and the work of Christ in this devoted and fervent minister of the gospel.
Philip is a man who withstood religious hypocrisy and corruption within the Assemblies of God, even to his own personal loss.He put the Word of God above denominational loyalties, and was eventually vindicated by circumstances, although not by the denomination.
But Philip never sought the praise of men, He lived in the sight of the “Father Who sees in secret…” .
He also stood against the blatant heresies which blossomed within Pentecostalism and Evangelicalism, valiantly teaching the Way of Truth, and rebuilding the scattered flock of God wherever possible, through his writings and preaching. God always answers the “enemy which comes in like a flood” with a standard, and with Watchmen.Philip stands out as one.
As for Philip’s preaching; He was a true expositor of the Word of God. This brother knew and loved the Word of God. Philip fed the flock as a Pastor , thus showing his love for Jesus.
This was a man who wept while He preached. Time and again as he expounded on the Saviour He loved, his voice would break; when he proclaimed the cross, or the Incarnation of Jesus, and the Love of God the Father who sent Him.
Philip and Aeron (Morgan) are together again, in Glory. How they ministered to me,as a younger minister!
Consider these two servants of God; Aeron, with His face alight with the joy and glory of God as he exulted in the gospel, and Philip with his fiery passion for Jesus, and his broken hearted preaching of the Love of the Saviour. Within a short time both of these men have gone, reminding us that real servants of God are but on loan from Heaven.
I miss them both. We all have many teachers, but how many of them are spiritual Fathers? Two strong voices, and both of them the fruit of the Pentecostal Revivals of the previous century are now gone to heaven. How I loved hearing their stories and testimonies of the blessed moves of God of those days, and of their own experiences as Pastors and ministers of Christ. How they enriched me!
Of course we don’t sorrow as those who have no hope, for we know that Philip has gone to be with the LORD, whom he loved and served.”The Righteous man dies and none takes it to heart, that the Lord has removed him from the evil to come…”.
Kathy, Mandy and Jeff, David and Jonathan, Our prayers are with you. I have counted it a privilege to have known and served Jesus with Philip, and prayerfully share in your (temporary) loss. Please know that many around the world are grateful for the memory of your husband and Father. May the church in Brisbane also know how they have blessed so many. Be assured of our prayers and love.
For the Lord loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off. The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever. The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.(Psalm 37:28-31)
