“Therefore say to the Israelites, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you have gone. I will show the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy through you before their eyes. (Ezekiel 36:22-23)
One of the problems people have with Christianity’s insistence that the God of the Bible is in the return of the Jewish exiles, and that the re-establishment of the State of Israel is an act of God, is that they can’t wrap their minds around the fact that the Jewish people for the most part are yet in unbelief.
The nation’s founders humanly speaking, were mostly secular and even Atheistic. Tel Aviv was recently voted as the world’s most “gay friendly” city, and recently held a transgender street festival for 80,000 degenerates.
Neither the Bible nor Christians who believe God has a purpose for Israel are naive about the current moral and spiritual state of Israel, which is as decadent as the rest of the western countries are. The book of Revelation calls Jerusalem, “Sodom and Egypt, the city where our Lord was crucified”. Revelation 11
So how could God have a plan for such a sinful people as the Jews? Why would God save such sinful and stubbornly unbelieving people? Israel is a microcosm of the entire human race. Anti-Semitism is the hatred of Grace. One could just as well ask, why would God choose Bill Randles, a decadent sinner, a drunken lecher ? God didn’t love me because of me, HE set his love upon us, in mercy and grace, in spite of our fallenness.
The return of Israel to the land after so many years of exile, banishment, persecution and pogram, has to do with the zeal the LORD has for his own name, and not because of the “goodness” of Israel.
Again the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, when the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by their conduct and their actions. Their conduct was like a woman’s monthly uncleanness in my sight. So I poured out my wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land and because they had defiled it with their idols. I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered through the countries; I judged them according to their conduct and their actions. And wherever they went among the nations they profaned my holy name, for it was said of them, ‘These are the Lord’s people, and yet they had to leave his land.’ I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations where they had gone.(Ezekiel 36:16-22)
God has set his love on Israel, and has promised never to do away with her as his people. She is not in faith currently, for the most part, only a remnant believes in the Messiah. Rabbinic Judaism isn’t the same religion as that of Moses and the prophets, in fact Rabbinism is the fulfillment of the prophecy of Jeremiah;
Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the Lord. For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.(Jeremiah 2:12-13)
Ultimately the Lord will bring Israel out from under the curse of the Law of Moses , and will bring them into the New Covenant, promised by Ezekiel and Jeremiah.
“‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws”. (Ezekiel 36;24-27)
Notice the order of events, First the LORD brings Israel back from all nations,back into the Holy Land. Afterwards, He cleanses them from their sins, and purifies their hearts from the inward alienation which expresses itself in various forms of idolatry.
Rather than a covenant engraved on stone, which is external to them,the New Covenant involves a “New Birth”, a removal of the stony hard heart, and replacement with a new tender heart, sensitive to God, and inwardly willing to follow the Lord.
I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine. Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices. I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign Lord. Be ashamed and disgraced for your conduct, people of Israel! (Ezekiel 36:30-32)
Already the Land of Israel is responding to the returning exiles of Israel, the deserts are blooming, fruit and vegetables are being exported to the ends of the earth, and that land which was once desolate is now prospering.
But we are reminded , these conditions are not a result of the “Righteousness” of the current Israelis. God has yet to bring Israel to repentance, soon She will be brought to the point of loathing and even mourning their sins against God.
God’s intention is to save the nation in one day, but Israel must first be brought to repentance, as Joseph’s brothers were in the climax of Genesis, when they realized they had sold their own brother, and that the Egyptian Noble standing before them was not Egyptian at all , but the brother whom they had betrayed and sold.
