And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.(Revelation 12:3-4)
The vision of Revelation 12 corresponds to the account of the fall of man in Genesis 3. What do we have in Genesis 3? A Woman,a Serpent and the promise of the birth of a Savior.
By the time of Revelation 12, The Woman is clothed in the Sun,Moon and Stars, and is pregnant. The Serpent has become a Dragon, invested with great power and authority.
We need not speculate the identity of the serpent for this vision gives the identity,
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.(Revelation 12:9)
Without explaining the details of the seven heads and ten Horns and the crowns, suffice it for the time to consider this; all political and worldly power is handed over to the Dragon, “the Whole world lies n the wicked One”. The powers of this world are increasingly put into the disposal of the Devil, “This is their hour and the power of darkness”.
What is the difference between a serpent and a dragon? A serpent has to be subtle.
The Serpent has become a Dragon! The end brings a horrifying clarity as the devil comes out in the open, and in the fierceness of his malice, to oppose the woman and her seed.
In the garden there was an indictment, for man had sinned. First the LORD questioned the man, but he refused accountability. The LORD then passed from the man to the woman, seeking by questioning to obtain from her some acknowledgment of guilt also. But the woman also refused accountability at that point.
The LORD then turned to address the serpent but there would be no questions this time, seeing the LORD had no intention to save the Devil. Instead a sure and lasting judgment was pronounced upon the serpent.
And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.(Genesis 3:14-15)
“I will put enmity between thee and the woman…”. There is a deeper level of meaning in this brief proto-evangel, but on the surface of it lies a profound truth; though Satan hates all of the human race, He harbors a special hatred for women. Satan successfully seduced the woman and her husband into defecting from God, but in God’s mercy the woman would be specially involved in the salvation.
Salvation would come through the birth of a miracle baby, the ” seed of the woman”. He would enter into the world to break the head of the serpent and to undo the primal curse.
Satan hates women. Consider the Satanic religions, such as Islam. How Muslims are taught to hate and despise women! So also the Satanic religion of secular humanism, and it’s deformed spawn, feminism. Feminism isn’t based upon love for women, it is instead hatred and contempt for all that is unique to women, the role of wife, mother, nurturer.
Abortion which springs out of the nihilism of the secular humanistic worldview, is an unnatural act which kills both the baby, and anything it also slays motherly in the soul of the unfortunate young woman talked into the practice. Behold the fruit of the sixties sexual revolution; in the tattooed, androgynous, haggard, jaded, masculinized young women we see everyday in the streets, not to mention the confused and feminized, and at other times barbaric young men also.
The serpent has always harbored a special enmity for women, seeking to denigrate and demean the beautiful God assigned role of wife, mother, nurturer and help-meet.
In view of the specific identity of the woman as being Israel, we see in this vision an answer to the inveterate problem of anti-semitism. Why is there almost universal Jew hatred? The Serpent hates Israel, has always hated Israel, and will eventually seek to marshal the world’s forces to obliterate Israel.
She(Israel) gave the world the Word of God, and through her came the Messiah. Israel’s existence is a constant reminder of the existence of God. Her birth was a miracle, so also her rebirth in 1948. The Devil would wipe Israel off of the globe if He could. Every census, pogram, holocaust, anti circumcision law, intifada, and Jihad that has occurred over these long centuries has borne testimony to the truth that the Dragon hates the woman.
Thus Israel’s longtime song has been;
In my distress I cried unto the Lord, and he heard me. Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue? Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper. Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar! My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace. I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.(Psalm 120)
