The Ungodly Are Not so…Psalm 1 and 2 pt 2

The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
For the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.(Psalm 1:4-6)

Psalm One is a wisdom psalm. The Spirit shows us by contrast the difference between the truly happy man, and his antithesis, the ungodly. In the sparest of language, two ways of life are shown side by side, the essence of the truly happy and of the miserable.

The ungodly are not all like the ‘blessed man’. They do hearken to the counsel of the ungodly. The ever shifting wisdom in the words of pundits, ‘experts’, psychologists, scientists, philosophers old and new, educators, politicians, opinion shapers, are given all authority by the ungodly.

But to the ungodly, the Bible is an outdated book, not relevant in the light of modern “insights into human nature”. After all the Prophets and Apostles of the Bible were narrow-minded, anti homosexual, anti psychological, Patriarchal figures who saw things in black and white! They didn’t have the modern insights of fields like sociology, psychology, and related fields.

The Biblical authors leave no room for tolerance of other people’s “faith traditions”. Nor did they have the benefit of the insights into human nature as discovered by godless atheists such as Freud, Maslow and Fromm.

But it is demonstrably proven fact that the godless are not happy, they are utterly miserable. How could the promoters of our modern “break throughs” such as feminism, identity politics, abortion on demand, no fault divorce, and homosexual marriage be other than miserable? As God says in Proverbs 8, “…All they that hate me love death!”.

The metaphor for the ungodly, is chaff. What a contrast to a rooted , healthy, fruitful tree! The ungodly are like the chaff, that is the empty , useless husk of a wheat grain.

Rejecting the very concept of absolute Truth, they have no roots (fixed principles). The ungodly are constantly arranged and re-arranged by the wind ( the spirit of the age, the shifting opinions of man), like a pile of chaff on a windy threshing floor.

What can you do with the chaff? It is inedible, you can’t make furniture out of it, it is an empty shell, stripped of its value. This is the state of those who reject a right relationship with the God who made them. They still bear the image of God, but they are hollowed out. Chaff is either blown away in the wind, or in the end, it is burnt.

Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

One of the things which contributes to the misery of the ungodly is that for the most part, all they see and live for is this temporal life. True happiness in large part depends on belief in a final judgment, and an afterlife.

To the sinner, the idea that death is the end of consciousness, is a mixed comfort, and a wishful thinking. Any reduction of responsibility, diminishes our humanity. Accountability to God infuses human life with significance, for all decisions are of eternal import. Animals will not give account for their actions, we do.

The righteous know this, and facing it, they “agree with their adversary quickly” while on the way to court, ( God’s judgment), pleading guilty. Through the gospel, they settle out of court, accepting the gift of God’s justifying salvation.

Preparation for final judgment allows the righteous to joyfully endure the inevitable trials and pains of this present life. When this life is seen as only a preparation for the life to come, trials and tribulations can be seen as temporary , and even useful experiences.

But when this life is seen as all there is, any suffering, trials and tribulations are made to seem unbearable interruptions to the already limited enjoyment of this temporal life.

What does he mean that “the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment”? The knowledge that men and women are responsible beings and not animals, accountable to an infinite ,personal and Holy God, is inexpressibly comforting to the godly man, and equally horrifying to the godless.

The wicked cannot stand with confidence and impudence, in the light of the coming judgment, they aren’t ready! They don’t want to believe it, they seek to deny it, ‘whistling past the graveyard’.

The godless have no place in the congregation of the righteous, they don’t ‘feel right’ there, because they feel judged , but that is because God is there. “I won’t set foot in a church, too many hypocrites there!”, bellows many an unbeliever, to which I usually reply, “There is always room for one more, come on in!”.

The Lord knows the way of the righteous…That is, the holy God regards the way, he takes a special interest in, he makes even “all things to work together for the good of those who love God and are the called according to His purpose!”(Romans 8:28)

But the way of the ungodly shall perish…The ungodly would not give credence to God’s word, he took no delight in it, he would rather honor and give much weight to the opinions of the experts, fallible man! The sinner would listen to any one but God.

Having built his life on mere chaff, and yet making sure he took his stand with the rebels against God, in the end the scornful is seated, almost completely paralyzed in cynicism and sin.He can hardly move now, believing almost nothing.

But at least he did it all his way! But we are to know, in closing, that the way of the ungodly will perish, it will be forgotten, cut off, eternally ruined, and separated from all that makes life worth living.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever would believe on Him, would not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

  5. Armand says:

Thank our merciful God there is still some time left, hope for sinner. Call on Him today. I say this with a heavy heart, and I’m sure I’m not the only one with friends and family that aren’t saved, but I really feel in my heart the door of opportunity to escape all what’s coming is closing fast. Never in history has so many end time prophecies lined up together. It’s kind of scary in a glorious way. This should concern and trouble all of us for the lost. Let us all examine ourselves, repent and Seek the Lord while He may be found and to point the ungodly to Christ. Lamentations 3-21. This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. 22It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. 24The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. 25The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. 26It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD. God bless.

It is the conviction by the Holy Spirit that we need desperately on the unsaved as well as the ones that believe they are saved…and i’m praying that many will bow their heads with true repentance. This was an EXCELLENT blog pastor Bill

May I say this series is very appropriate at this time Bill..? Given the recent discussion on your blogs over who to ‘support’, and indeed whether one should ‘support’ those who are ungodly.

  8. billrandles says:

you make a great point Roger- what a dilemna we face!

    • Roger says:

Bill – we live in NZ, so in this situation we don’t have a decision to make.. however, come our election time, also voluntary, we have the same choices – vote or not vote, depending on how Lord Jesus leads us as individuals in prayer. At rare times we have had ‘born again’ ones standing in one or other of the NZ political parties – it is then that we need to prayerfully make a decision.

  9. lovey says:

I offer this for your consideration

I thought he made some worthwhile arguments

    http://www.metaxastalk.com/wsj-christians-vote-trump/

  10. Roger says:

Lovey, at the end of your above linked article – the writer has this to say:

“..Not to vote is to vote. God will not hold us guiltless…”

As has been discussed elsewhere recently – your vote is not compulsory, you can choose NOT to vote for either Clinton or Trump, in so doing, you are ‘voting’ against ungodly behavior. The writer you refer to is correct – God will not hold us guiltless. What we do and say is noted by Him.

Lovey – you say: “..I thought he made some worthwhile arguments..”

That writer is using words and ‘arguments’ to support his own belief, and to justify his action in voting. We all have a choice:
    – we may, follow the words of men, and allow their words to effect our actions, behavior, and belief.
    – or, follow the words of Lord Jesus, and allow His words to effect our actions, behavior and belief.

I agree that He will not find us guiltless – better to seek His way before the action, than have to repent and ask forgiveness after any misguided action.

Better to seek His way and eternal life with Him, than as Bill says above:
“..But we are to know, in closing, that the way of the ungodly will perish, it will be forgotten, cut off, eternally ruined, and separated from all that makes life worth living.”

  11. Lovey says:

    https://gotquestions.org/Christians-vote.html

I I am continuing to examine this issue and consider counsellors who are also considering the ramifications of “to vote or not to vote ” as a Christian I also found this article link

I realize we must examine our choices and decisions by the bWiritten Word of God as our foundation

And as we hear others positions to remember the dispensation position and whether the thinking of writers and fellow believers regard the dispensation or administration of their perspective at all the when reading the Word

Prayer and continuing in the study of the Word of God

    Thank you Roger

  12. Kim Sega says:

For the last elections I see how millions of the churches did not vote. Therefore we got Obama. Now we have Clinton so ungodly it is awful. and Trump that over ten yrs ago prayed with Pastor Jefferies and others and dedecated his life to Jesus. HE has raised a great family and made all the changes he can in his life. and despite the fact he has never drank, took drugs and finally understood mostly what it was to walk with the L-rd. Even when he was first stating his campaign, he being a new Christian did not quite know what it was to repent of some things so he asked the 800 or some of them to explain. Everything he is running on is from our G-dly Constitution. none of us are to judge the world but are to stand on truth and tell them all why. How anyone can turn away from him is wrong. HE is a truth teller. and remember it was before he got saved that he was talking to a man , the usual that millions have done in locker rooms, something he is ashamed for and has apologies for in front of the world as well as America. To his wife and family etc. HE is not a quitter and told us so. Anyone who can stay standing and putting up with what he has put up with is a strong statesman. does anyone truly see how the left has attacked him with that many women just before a final debate or does anyone have eyes to see how he loves all cultures of people but doesn’t want those in any cultures to come in and harm, kill us and take over. G-d gave us the right to protect our families an homes. also immigration is a law of the land to do it the lawful way. so many churches just say love , love and love the bad people who want in and are being brought in. looking at the Bible, did G-d tell David to just talk and love the giant ? Or for Moses to stop as the enemies chassed HIS people ,,, no , the waters open and the people fled and were saved of death, while the enemy was destroyed, just like in many other Bible stories. How plain can it be a ilega president bring in his brothers who are Islam Isis and now we have over 51 jihad camps in our land and almost every city a sanctuary city full of them. Our vets lay in the morgue dead and no special burial , and our people go hungry and are loosing homes and jobs and all else. we are falling fast….how can the church or anyone with a mind believe these lies about Trump? and now with the emails coming in , showing what many of us has seen growing for years want to vote left and put their names on abortion, same sex marriage and gays, plus so many other things like teaching our children Islam and much more. I say parents think gov is god…I think the thing that bothers me the most is the ones who call themselves Christians , knowing Trump is a born against Christian and turn their back on him. Trump wonders why their past sins are forgiven and his aren’t, Today we see a different church and different Jesus that Paul warned us of. and some are sayng the reason their church is not voting is it is to political??? but my Bible says we are to vote and hold them accountable and others say their church doesn’t want to loose their tax deductible as the gov will take it away if they vote for Trump. they also want a feel good gospel so more people with itchy ears will come in…no more preaching on hell etc. The great falling away is here in full bloom. for the last years Congress has been rated low and are known as the do nothing congress..known as the Rino’s and are left and trying to look like sheep.. Now the churches will not vote and this time another just as bad or worlse will get the WH ..there will be the civil war that G-d spoke of for the last days like never was or will be again.Top that off with they stand against Israel and Jews and think they replaced Israel… Romans nine, ten and eleven say differently as well as Genesis 12:3 and all thru the Bible. soon we will see another false flag and see Russia, Iran and N Korean along with China and others nuke America if we don’t wake up. Remember it is Isis is the one supposedly being hit in Israq, Clintons and Obama s friends who they have supported and is just another el Quata radical bunch . my Bible says G-d send jihad for sons of disobedience. G-d says those against Israel is against HIM and are cursed and no one will have axcuse and when they refuse the truth, He will send the lie and they will believe it too. how sad the great falling awy is for so many. and in Israel Jews , even the rabbi’s are getting saved and Bibi sent out media to tell his people to read the Bible which he has been in Bible study for some time..so my Prayer is no one is perfect and there is only one gospel, forgive is devine and for me, how dare the Church turn against Trump. they think they are more saved than HIM…Timothy says, if anyone preaches a different gospel , from such turn away. and what does darkness have to do with light. to not be willing to loose their tax money they put America and their families at great risk, pray and do the right thing. if not war will be on our land…and our gov has been signed over by Bill Clinton in the 90’s to the EU and UN…I know that Trump is hurt and yet on he goes to fight the good fight to stop the hell coming down on the US….so I pray…

  13. Marleen says:

The U.S. was part of establishing the U.N. (to replace the League of Nations, in the 40s) right after WWII. The U.S. also voted in favor of the nation of Israel (against the vote of the U.S.S.R. or Russia). Nevertheless, I do not say this in order to favor Bill Clinton.

  14. Jeanne T. says:

“What does he mean that “the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment”? Excellent!!

  15. Julie says:

Beautiful article of the contrast. Sad to observe sometimes.

  16. julie says:

I like your answer to the claim of hypocrisy in the church: “there’s always room for one more, come on in!” I always wonder….if the world doesn’t like hypocrites why do they spend so much time watching movies? What is a hypocrite but someone who pretends to be something that they are not? What is an actor? A paid hypocrite! Someone making millions off of his or her hypocrisy!
