But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble. (Proverbs 4:18-19)
The Bible tells us that everybody who ever lived is on a path. Life is not static, it is an ongoing journey. We are all headed in some direction, and we will be tomorrow, more of whatever we are today. Step by Step we progress, no one stays the same, and everyone ends up somewhere else at the end of the journey.
The path of the Righteous, is as a shining light. Someone takes off on a long walking trek, at the first crack of dawn, and the light is just a sliver on the horizon. Things are not clear yet, but we make our way along the path, one step at a time. Some shadows look foreboding but as we near the actual object we realize there is not much to them.
Step by step the light gets brighter, things become clearer and everything is visible as it really is, no more shadowy figures of distorted proportions, there is more and more light along the way as the sun rises. We see further down the road also, and know what to anticipate, what to avoid, ad where we are headed.
Eventually it is high noon, and all is clear and crystal, the light reveals everything in its true form.
This is the story of my spiritual life. Sometime around the age of 18 or 19 I turned aside from my own path, to see a light. (I had been in darkness, stumbling around without direction, and putting myself in danger without being able to discern it.)
The light that shone into my life was the truth about why Jesus died on the cross. I saw that “He made Him who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might be made the Righteousness of God in Christ”( 2 Corinthians 5:21)
That light was like the first glint of a coming sunrise and set me on a path that I hadn’t trod before. As I entered into a life of discipleship(learning of Jesus), more light was diffused to me. I knew very little at first, only that the cross was substitution, that Jesus took my place there, and that thus, God loved me as a son.
I also perceived in that slight sliver of light, that Jesus was coming, to Judge the world in Righteousness. Maranatha! Oh yes , also it had something to do with Israel becoming a nation in 1948. That was about all I knew at first.
But walking with God has been like a steady sunrise of light. He teaches us, and leads us into all truth. The church has been a place of light to me, and the Bible is the very depository of God’s light. God reveals, that is his nature.Everything is becoming much clearer now.
There have been clouds and shadows and storms along the way of course. I have lived through times wherein the truth has been attacked and seemingly eclipsed, but like so many others, I have held to the light which was given me, and remained in it. Even if I had to admit I was wrong, or even if I had to lose friends, or to break away from once favorite teachers, whenever God’s light has revealed.
But in the Proverb above there are two paths. Sometimes they see to converge, or to run parallel but they are radically different paths heading into completely different directions. They seem to intersect at times, giving us the impression we were walking the same path, but ultimately it is revealed that some are going in one direction and others in another.
I know people who once had light, and rejoiced in it. For a while they were in it, but they went another way. Our paths intersected, or were parallel for a season. Jesus told those in his day that this was the case with them, they loved John Baptist, but wouldn’t follow Jesus,
He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.(John 5:35)
The path of the wicked is the opposite of the path of the Just. It is a sunset, it just keeps getting darker, and the light diminishes as time goes on…as described in another Proverb, which I call the death of the simple,
For at the window of my house I looked through my casement, And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding, Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house, In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night...(Proverbs 7:6-9)
Notice the progression of darkness? In the Twilight, in the Evening, and in the black and dark night? I think we can all see, that the darkness is deepening, and that “this is their hour and the power of darkness…” as Jesus warned us.
How many out there are among those who once knew? They had once rejoiced in the light, they knew something of fellowship, the body of Christ, the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the things pertaining to the end? Was that a sunrise or a sunset? Was it just a phase?
To Him who has , more will be given to him, but to him who has not, even what he thought he had will be taken away from him…(Matthew 13;12)
What took you out? Did someone offend you? Was it a false teacher? Did you just give in to your sins? Were you embarrassed about being “into Jesus’ when you were younger? I know so many who once rejoiced in the light, but who have faded so far away… Please turn around before its too late, Jesus is calling us all!
