The Cross is the Location of God’s Love ( and nowhere else) …

For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8)

The Cross of Jesus happened at a precise point in time and history. Jesus gave his life as an offering to the Father for us, to satisfy the claims of Divine justice and the demands of the broken law.

We know this sacrifice was accepted by the Father, because when they came on the third day, to finish embalming him, the tomb was empty, and Angels told the witnesses “Why look for the living among the dead, He is not here, he is risen!” .

The sacrifice of the cross was planned, foreordained, by the Father, from the very foundation of the world. He knew we would fall, and in love He made provision. He knew we would have to be saved, from the destruction of our own sin, and from His Holy wrath.

Everything which God did in the earth among men, was in anticipation of the cross. The calling of Israel, the Temple and it’s services of sacrifice, the ministry of mercy and intercession, the election of a Priestly order, and everything else God did in the time leading up to the Incarnation of Jesus, None of it would mean anything without the cross.

To what purpose, would all of the teaching of the Prophets, the exploits of the Kings and Judges, the worship in the temple… in short everything in scripture… what good would all of that do without the cross? All anticipates the cross, and only the cross gives ultimate meaning to it.

For example, If Israel was created, and given knowledge and light, taught to worship and separated by law, clothing and diet, only to have an improved life in this life, but then to die and to have to suffer wrath for their sins forever, could we really say that God loved them? The cross is the essential expression of God’s love.

What good would the ministry of Jesus be, without the cross, as the culmination of it ? What good would it do to bring His higher moral teaching, and for him to go about “doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the Devil” , if there were no crowning act of the giving of himself on the tree in our place? A healed sinner is still a sinner, doomed and under the wrath of a Holy God. Everything Jesus did on earth pointed towards the cross and it’s fruits.

There is no Love of God, without the cross.

God is Love. Jesus is the ultimate and full revelation of the Love of God, and the ultimate act of Jesus, was his self giving on the cross, as our substitute.

God’s love is inseparable from the cross. There is and has never been any Divine love, other than that which either anticipated and pointed to the cross, or that steady flow out of the cross into history.

The Cross of Jesus is a like a beacon of Divine Love, radiating back , as far back as the garden of Eden and even before he foundation of the World. We see the shadow of the cross in the garden, when the Prophecy of the “seed of the woman” who would come to crush the serpent’s head, but whose heel would be bruised, and in the horror of the first couple being clothed in the skin of a recently slain animal.

In just the same way, the rays of Divine love flow out of the cross into the future and all the way until the end of time and into eternity. Millions of hardened, ruined and stained sinners have been spiritually slain, by the good news of the substitute Savior over the centuries. As soon as they hear it, they know inside that it is true, as Isaiah prophesied that we would,

Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high. As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men: So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.(Isaiah 52:13-15)

We are brought into the very throne room of God, and given a glimpse of the eternal future, in Revelation 4-5, in which we see and participate in the worship of Heaven itself, around the throne of the Lamb. The “new Song” is necessary, for the “old Song” is no longer adequate in and of itself. The “Old Song ” worships God as Creator,

Thou Art Worthy Oh Lord, to recieve Glory, and Honor and Power. For Thou hast Created all things for thy pleasure…(Revelation 4;11)

Why is this perfectly true and right Hymn no longer adequate? Because we have fallen, and need to be redeemed in order to know and worship and love and be loved by God. Thus the new Song, is sung to the “Lamb who had the marks of slaughter”, and is of the blood shed for our Redemption.

And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. (Revelation 5:9-10)

This is why Jesus said, in John 3:16… God so loved the World… ( he didn’t say God so Loves the World). The way Jesus put it, it implies an action. God did something to love the world.

At one point in time, space and history, God Loved the World…on the cross. it was real, concrete and absolute Love. If you had run your hand up the cross, you would have splinters. It happened on a calendar day, for as we say in the creed, “He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, suffered died and was buried…” , they embalmed him and laid him in a tomb.

Satan hates this teaching because people are deceived already about the Love of God. There is a humanistic, abstract concept of the Love of God, a general, “unconditional” love, that they are counting on, if they believe in God at all. “God is Love, and Love is God”, they carelessly say. They may just as well say, “Peace on earth…” or “Judge not…” or any of the dozen or so other religious sayings which half salve men’s consciences.

This is why my burden lately is to stress that the LOVE of God cannot be disconnected from the cross. There will be no personal experience of Divine love without it, and there will never be another pivotal event from heaven of the same nature. God loved the World once, “In this way did God once love the world, He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever goes on believing in Him, shall not be ruined, but shall go on having eternal life”. ( Paraphrase of John 3:16 as taught by David Pawson).

The biblical definition of love (particularly the love of God) is far different to the sentimentalised ideas gained through popular culture

Unfortunately, too often, professing believers can’t seem to understand and accept the difference.

  3. Having watched David Pawson’s teaching I can say that you paraphrased his teaching pretty well. It is still worth checking out his original teaching. The amazing thing is that those who oppose this teaching in you and call you a heretic for it, say David Pawson is sound. Therefore, the issue is not the “heresy” but the “heretic.” But very interesting that these same people condemn you for how you spoke against Jacob’s ungodly vitriol against people who were defending David Nathan, while you condemned David Nathan’s heresy that the blood of Jesus will not profit anybody anything in the millennium. This you and Moriel rightly condemned as a denial of the eternal gospel. Yet Jacob also taught that people in the millennium will be saved but not as we understand it, not salvation by grace. This is as much a contradiction to the gospel as denying that the blood will profit anybody anything in the millennium. There can be no salvation except by the blood and salvation by grace. Much more serious than this doctrine espoused by David Pawson. Yet your critics are strangely silent about Jacob’s own heresy.

The lesson I have learned is that no man should be put on a pedestal and God hates a false scale. It is an abomination in His sight. So we should be cautious before we call every difference of doctrine heresy for when we call that card we then must be consistent and deride all who push the same doctrine, or else we undermine our stance by our selectivity in whom we choose to denounce. Then how can we expect people to believe us when we stand against the true wolves for we appear to them to be as the boy who cried wolf?

Let’s focus on the guilt and pain of his having died for us and mix that with love classic sado-masochism

    • Tim says:

Why should there be guilt and pain about a Creator God making a personal sacrifice of His own choice out of love for His creation?

Where do you get your incredibly warped ideas from Mark?

Your own guilt over the fact that you choose to reject Him?

      • Mark Boggia says:

        Dearest Tim

I’m rejecting your obscene man made ideas that exploit through emotional manipulation the needy and weak.

The premise of original sin suggests that sins of our forebears can be inherited, there is not a legal system in the world that accepts this as standard practice. So another example of manipulation through a double bind that we need to be both equally grateful and fearful for your God.

I show know deference to your God, Jesus Christ can suck my dick !

    • Tim says:

More evidence of your intelligent “wit” and “intelligence” Mark.

You are such a credit to your claimed atheism, and its religious founder, the father of lies, who you so clearly choose to give your allegiance to.

      • Donald says:

In accordance with Ezekiel 18 every man will be held accountable for his own sin. We cannot blame anyone else for our sin – regardless. This was done in the garden of Eden by Adam when he pointed the finger towards his wife and tried to blame her. She, in turn, attempted to blame the serpent, God still dealt with Adam, Eve and the serpent (representing false religion) as individuals. Therefore, each individual person who has heard the truth and rejected it will be judged according to his own sin and lack of belief in the Son and what He accomplished on the cross. God has said that every man should turn away from his sin and turn to His Son in order to escape His (Gods) judgement. As true as the sun radiates its light into a dark world so too does the Son radiate His glory in heaven. All who try enter into heaven and are in the darkness will be pushed away into the outer darkness. His glory He will not give to anyone else! The church reflects the glory of Christ in this world because without it we would be in darkness too. Can you imagine a world without the sun or the moon? No light during the day and no light during the night – total darkness. So, there are only two forces at war here, spiritual light (Christ) and spiritual darkness (Satan). The creation shows the truth of Gods Word, it shows who He is and it shows spiritual truths to those in the world (Genesis 1 and Romans 1 tie up). The sun pushes the darkness away everyday it rises and allows the moon to reflect its rays of light at night, so the church reflects the Light of Christ into a spiritually dark world. Either you are in one or the other. In Genesis 3:15 there were only two seeds, not thousands, only two. One seed grows into a tree and produces even more seeds and those seeds fall to the ground and produce more trees and so on. Of which tree does one belong? Where one finds himself is where he wants to be spiritually. If you are spiritually in the light then you are one with Christ who is the light. We can only be the light of the world if Christ is in us. His light shines outwards to others and thereby draw them who are lost and in the darkness into His light. If one is lost in the woods at night the first thing he will search for is a house with a light on so they can seek help. If there are two houses found, one with a light on and one with no light, which do you think he will go to? The one with the light. Since God gives us the very mysteries of His Word to share in the form of the Gospel we take His truth (light) into the world. Nothing of my opinion or anyone else – only Gods opinion counts. Since man chose to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil he has the choice to choose whom he will serve, Christ who is the light and prince of peace or darkness, Satan who is the prince of darkness. Since Jesus Christ accomplished the will of God on the earth and that will was to pay the price of each individuals sin we should not harden our hearts towards God but rather humble ourselves before Him who knows the motives and the attitudes of every heart, present, past and future. Vengeance is Gods and not ours, He will avenge. Atheism is a religion on its own, since, believe it or not, every man is a priest and they minister the words of their own religion and try to draw others to it. The only true religion is Jesus Christ and Him crucified. We will stand before one God in the judgement and that is the God of the Bible. God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all 1 John 1:5; Genesis 1:1-5; John 1:1-5. One final word – Satan has been trying to reverse Genesis 1:3-5 since the beginning of time and He will never get it right. It stands, therefore, that those who are one with Satan will attempt to do their fathers wishes and prevent the light of Christ from shining into a dark world so those caught up in sin can be saved from the coming judgements of God. Again, today if you hear His voice do not harden your heart towards Him who is all powerful, ever present and omniscient.

I have noticed people getting tripped-up over this, and I have a thought as to why….

This is how God loved “the world” (as a whole) – a point and place in history.
No denying the fact that our very standing before God the Father depends upon what we do with what HE has done for us in HIS Perfect and Ultimate act of LOVE.

I think people get confused, however, believing that this teaching means that The Father only loved us ‘once and at one time’… and that you/we are saying that He doesn’t love/seek/save throughout our lives today and throughout history. This verse comes to mind in regard to HOW the Father loves EACH one of us –

“and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us…”
    (from Acts 17)

    So, maybe this will help?…
God in this way loved the world (as a whole) once – (one time and for all mankind):
He sent His only-begotten (prophesied) Son, that whomever believes (and continues in) Him may have eternal Life.
And also….God, in this way, loves each of us (individually and throughout all time):
by determining our appointed times and the boundaries of our habitation, that we would seek God
and His Son, Jesus, Whom was sent for ‘the world’ (as a whole) in order to be the (individual) Way to Him).

He has done everything to Provide The Way (His Son), and also to lead us to seek Him during our own individual lives.

All men, therefore, will stand without excuse for rejecting this TRUTH.
