In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks. Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in. Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength: For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low; he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust. (Isaiah 26:1-5)I
Isaiah portrays the climax of God’s dealings with humanity in terms of two cities; the proud, God defying, City of confusion, and the City whose builder and maker is God.
The destruction of the “City of confusion” is the theme of the 24th chapter of Isaiah. Man’s long rebellion, epitomized by the construction of cities, has come under judgment and collapsed under the weight of her sins. A Shorthand name for the Humanistic project, is Babylon.
There is a long continuity in scripture and history, of the city being a place of concentrated rebellion. From the construction of the first city, in Genesis 4, Enoch (Fresh Start), unto the cities of Sodom, Gommorah, Babylon, Ninevah, Rome, and Jerusalem also, cities have epitomized man’s defiance of God. The first city was built to mitigate the effects of the sentence passed upon Cain, to be a vagabond and a wanderer, for murdering his brother.
But God answers man’s sinful and rebellious desire for the sense of control and security (without having to resort to God), of cities, with a city of his own making, the New Jerusalem. All of his pilgrims in this earth have left the city of man, in search of the Better city.
For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. (Hebrews 11:10)
“We have a strong city…” The city of God looks despicable and weak to worldly eyes, but it is stronger than Babylon the Great. The poor and those who know they are needy comprise it’s population, they have turned to God for forgiveness and Redemption. They have very little worldly power, (i.e. Military, Money, Media, Political Authority in this life), they only power is Truth, and the power to supplicate and intercede to God.
“…Its walls and bulwarks are Salvation…” If a fallen sinner turns to the LORD and is saved, what can anyone in the World do about it? Salvation is forever, it transcends this life. If you are saved, this life is as bad as it will ever be for you, everything afterwards is light and glory!
The only true safety and security is found in being right with God. To be at Peace with God, and set “in the right” , and to know the love and promises of God, and to be brought into the “city of refuge”that God has prepared for the repentant guilty sinner, is the definition of security itself. Truly the Psalmist spoke, that God’s lovingkindness, is better than life itself.
Who may enter the gates of that city? The Righteous nation which keeps the Truth. As the world plunges towards the final conflict called the Great tribulation, the issue will be “The Truth vs the LIE”.
The whole world comes under a delusion, a lie which damns. They wanted the lie, insisted upon it, rejected the many pleas of truth for it, and allowed themselves to be soothed by it, conditioned and trained in it, by the ‘powers that be’, by the culture, the opinion shapers, entertainers, educators and the rest of the cultural gatekeepers, which are called “The Kings of the Earth and their rulers”.
The Lie is the fantasy of a godless, new, modern world. It is more compassionate and understanding than the old world which was influenced by Christianity and the Bible. This lie touts a new global unity, a one world Government, one world economy and one world religion. It is based on the original lie of the Serpent in the Garden, that men can be as gods, knowing good and evil.
But there is a nation, (or a city) within this world, which “Keeps the Truth”. They have been allowed to see through the LIE, and they will not let go of the TRUTH as revealed by Jesus, and the Apostles and Prophets of the Bible. They have had to reject the lie, and to go against the conditioning, and seduction of the Lie, which our Satan infused culture now pumps out 24/7.
The Truth flies in the very face of the LIE of the Serpent. The Truth is the revelation that man could never be a ‘god’ but that God became a man, so that he could die for our sins to save us.
The Righteous nation, is only righteous because of the faith they have placed in their redeemer, Jesus Christ, thus they have been justified by His blood, and set at right with God. (There is still time to join them). They shall enter into the strong city, just as Noah once entered into the Ark.
But there is much anguish and mental distress in the Last days, particularly to those going against the tide. The Temptation is always there to fall apart, to give in to anxiety or to despair and depression, hence a promise from God.
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. (Isaiah 26:3)
Fix your mind on God; on His Son, On His Word, His Promises and His love. Make sure you are with others doing the same, speak of Him with others, your mind will be calmed, and you will find that you can trust in Him no matter what comes.
Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lordhearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not. ( Malachi 3:16-18)
For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low; he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust (Isaiah 26:4-5)
The “strong city” is strong because she relies upon God. Her people are humbled, they put no confidence in the flesh or in man. The Lofty city is built upon pride. Pride in man, his ways, his technology, his “evolution” and his ideals. John Lennon, Satan’s minstrel, wrote a pretty fitting anthem for it, called “Imagine”, in which he extolled the virtues of the proud city of man. But it is doomed.
