Life In The Body of Messiah… Church 6

Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. ( i Corinthians 12:27)

The Church, is the ‘body of Messiah’, the earthly vessel through which the LORD reveals and expresses himself in the here and now. Each born again Christian is a member of the Body.

What does it mean to be in the body of Christ? To be a part of a local church?

The Body is a brotherhood. we are part of a family. Belonging to a local church is taking your place in the family. We are to know one another, (which takes time and forbearance) and to develop bonds of love, through prayer, fellowship and bearing one another’s burdens. In this way, in a healthy Church, the Life of Jesus is communicated.

The Assemblies of God’s people, are intended for mutual edification.  Every believer should come to church, with a heart open to share, testify, give a scripture, pray for a need,  among the body of Christ. We strive to build each other up and to wash each other’s feet, spiritually.  There is no clergy class, although there are gifted teachers and leaders,  but everyone can share something, for the edification of the body, for all true believers have a measure of the Holy Spirit.

Someone may say, “…we don’t have time in our services for just anyone to get up and share what’s on their heart” but what about before and after the service proper?  We are to know each other in the body, and be willing to be attentive to the needs one of another, and at least be qualified enough to pray for our brothers, and /or give an encouraging scripture.

This is life in Messiah. We know each other, and have real experiences of love, giving, sharing, encouraging, each other in the name of Jesus. The World really doesn’t know anything about this, but it is real wherever the body of Christ is real.

People have come to think ‘church’ is a professionally run, program driven, spectacle that they just attend. They flock to Churches which they believe are successful, (based on numbers, quality of programs, powerful speakers, and high quality Music). Some of these Churches are so big, it is hard to know anyone in them. It is possible to slip in, attend and still be alone or pretty much alone to go back to live the rest of your life.

This is not the ideal that Jesus had in mind when he founded the Church. Real Church is spiritually organic, relational, calling for Koinonia, (Total participation), designed to reveal Jesus, and to build us up in this world which daily seeks to tear us down.

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. ( Ephesians 4:15-16)

The Body “edifies itself in Love”, ie the Love of God, and also the joints of the body, supply and hold together the members of the body of Messiah. This is Church.

Church is Spiritual. It the place where the Holy Spirit is working and flourishing. He is the one who gives us the power and the gifts to build each other up in love, and to stand together against the onslaughts of this world. I go to Church expecting to encounter the Holy Spirit in some form or another. I pray that the members of our fellowship stay full of the Spirit, and that the Sermons and songs,Hymns and Spiritual Songs we sing, will be inspired of the Holy Spirit.

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as He will ( I Corinthians 12:7-11)

Everybody ought to leave Church different and better off than when they came. Church is life, whereas the World we live in is death.  The life extends throughout the week, day after day as the Church prays for each other, edifies one another with teachings, verses, testimonies, gifts,( practical and spiritual). We bear one another’s burdens, and if one suffer, we all enter into that suffering. When one of us is exalted, we all rejoice. There is something so wholesome about this kind of environment to thrive, in, it is hard to express.

I wanted to just give a little snapshot of an ideal of the life in the body of Christ, what it should be, why it is a blessing, and why it is such a tragedy that so many have been denied this blessing, through Church Splits, dead lifeless Churches, Egotistical leadership, false doctrine, Churches that follow the Spirit of the age,  etc.

No Christian should have to try and live out their life alone, with no one to pray for or to pray for them, no one to care for, or inquire of, no verses, encouragements, personal experiences of the gifts of the Spirit, the Charisma of the differing kinds of gifted believers. Jesus ordained Church, and we can all have it, in Jesus. You could say it is our (new) birthright.

I too became a follower of Jesus Christ in1971, soon leaving the Roman catholic church to attend a Bible believing Assembly of God church. I have often wondered was it just the newness of the Holy Spirit that made fellowship with believers so sweet or my young age or being naive. I have not found a church open to the direction of God, only prescribed performances and scripted interaction.

I agree with you brother but it is not just the big churches where people are left to walk alone. There is such a pervasive religious exercise of “going to church”. Weather you go once a week or 3 times a week, your lives don’t really intersect except when you “go to church”. You don’t really know each other, so how then can you love one another deeply? But this seems to be all that people want, except for a few and they seem to be far between and not easy to find. I for one am so greived by the condition of the church. No one else in my family is saved and yet when I go to the church I started attending 2 years ago, I am just as alone as at any other time and there’s probably not more than 50 people. It’s become increasingly difficult to make myself go and most of the time I don’t anymore because I can listen to a sermon by myself at home. Thankfully I do know another family who left the religious institution many years ago and feels the same and we meet together when we can. We love Jesus and we love each other but I have not found that in any church that I’ve visited since I first believed 15 years ago. It’s heartbreaking and very lonely for those of us who want more than to just sit and listen to a sermon but one day we shall all be together and we shall know and love one another.

I would love to encourage you… as my experience has been the same as yours…
desiring what God would have for us in His Body, what is REAL and ALIVE and GENUINE.

Over 15 years ago, the Lord removed our family from a church that was almost “everything” to us. Our hearts were there with Jesus, and His people (we thought). But then, we later discovered after the Lord led us away, that it was not “all about Jesus” for some of those people, but more about superficial relationships and ‘a place’ after all. It was literally heartbreaking. Through that trial, the Lord taught me to wait upon Him to build what He would desire for us. I tried and tried to fit in at other places we would visit, but they just were not right for us. What you describe above is exactly what we were finding, along with so much false-teaching. The Lord kept asking me to trust Him and be patient, not compromising what He has shown/taught me.

I didn’t realize it would take so long, but after 15+ years, the Lord has put my own grown/married children right across the street from us with their growing families. And now, they are following Jesus together with us – and some of our friends are beginning to receive Jesus as their Lord/Savior and joining together into our lives! We just had a beautiful baptism for one of them last night in our kiddie pool! Praise the LORD for His faithfulness!! He even supplied a double-rainbow in the sky after this magnificent event!

I am not saying that people should not gather together in a building on Sundays with more traditional leadership, etc… as long as you can find what is REAL – but I just want to encourage those of us who have tried but have not been able to find genuine “Church Body Life” together, not to give up…

“If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us!” ~AMEN!

And I also want to state: “Believers in Grace” has been a HUGE BLESSING in my life – like an oasis in a very dry and barren desert!! And for your Holy Spirit-filled/led outreach I am FOREVER GRATEFUL!!! Thank you for your obedience to teach the Truth in Love!!! You have been greatly used by the LORD to teach and encourage us through this time!!!

I relate to the above comments also and would like to share a thought of the Churches in America. With our celebration of independence upon us I was thinking of freedom and the Church. Reading the articles about the Church and what it is and how it should conduct itself in local fellowships I thought of how freedom has been somewhat of a hinderance to the Church. We in American have total freedom to assemble and worship with no fear or of loss and it has produce a casualness in our devotion. We therefore see a mixture of believers and unbelievers in most congregations, the regenerate with the unregenerate,a mixture if I may.Now think of the countries where it is not lawful to meet as a Church,Where it could cost you dearly if found out.How many unbelievers would be found in those congregations?I would submit there would be little to no mixture, mixture weakens and when Christ returns the Church will be glorious.Don’t be discouraged brothers and sisters keep following Jesus ,He will prepare His Church for His coming.I will leave you with this 1st Peter 4:12-14. Love and God bless

I used to love my church. We have a senior pastor and an assistant pastor, and the church teaching was biblical and the fellowship was sweet. But now my church has kowtowed to government CV restrictions, and instead of faces turned towards God in worship, there are masked, identity-less, fearful people who are careful to keep 6 ft apart and not go near any of their fellow believers. In my church, the idol of covid has been set up in the sanctuary, and all must bow to it. Instead of fellowship, we have people treating each other like bags of disease. Instead of joyful singing, there is faint mumbling through masks. Because it is apparently so dangerous for us to gather in larger numbers, we now have three services with a tiny number of people in each service. No one seems to see the irony and unfairness in this, when people can gather at Costco and Walmart in the hundreds but the government forces us to only have a small percentage of full capacity at our church at any given time.

Our leadership, including our pastors, seem to revel in the slavish obedience to a disgusting, evil government. Our assistant pastor sends weekly emails crowing about how wonderful the government is because it has now permitted us to meet at 15% capacity inside, but if we meet outside there are no capacity limits and we don’t have to wear masks! He thanks God for the “vaccines”, which, incidentally, are killing and maiming people in greater numbers than the covid flu ever could… But he has told me to shut up and stop bothering him with facts, because his mind is made up. What is this new Christianity that is defined by just how far we can stretch ourselves to obey government instead of God? What kind of Christian leadership salivates at the prospect of licking the boots of a government that murders babies, brainwashes and mutilates children, a government that hates God and glorifies satan? Apparently a twisting of the meaning of Romans 13 has become the new gospel, and we can throw out the rest of the Bible!

I have tried to continue attending this church. But I no longer feel the presence of the Holy Spirit when I am there. All I feel is sorrow and anger. How I miss worship! How I miss the fellowship of other believers!

I am desperately looking for a new church.

Sister, you are not alone. The “Covid crisis” was used by God to reveal all of this slavish obeisance to Government, in order to prepare us all for the ultimate test, the Mark of the Beast. It is heartbreaking, all I can say is if nothing else find like minded believers to fellowship with, ala Malachi 3:16-18. “Here we have no continuing city but we look for the One that is coming… Hebrews 13:4
