The Final Accomodation;The Mark…Rev 14

If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,  The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:  And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.(Revelation 14:9-11)

One of the nightmares of living in this age, is the burden of having to  witness the steady  accommodation of the seeming leaders of the Evangelical and Pentecostal movements to the world spirit. So much of evangelicalism has allowed pastors who value “relevance”, to the point of actually denying Christ.

To many faithful members of the churches, it must seem as though the former verities have collapsed, one after another, as so many of the notable leaders have accepted and defended the unthinkable and indefensible. Hell and Judgment are being denied, as ‘relational evangelism’ replaces the old “courtroom model” of the book of Romans. (Everything is about ‘relationships” right?)!

Feminism has long been accommodated in the churches, in the ordination of women, as has humanistic psychology in the teaching, counsel and qualifications for ministry.

Recently spectacles such as the joint services between Christians and Islamics, (Chrislam), have become almost common place in some circles. Willow Creek church which has impacted tens of thousands of evangelical churches around the world, allowed an Imam to speak in the pulpit following 9-11, Who would have imagined that twenty years ago?

There is also a trend among toned down “hipster” churches, for pastors to speak “frankly” about sexual matters, in a way which would have been unthinkable 30 years ago among christians. The public language and humor of these ministers has gone beyond what once could have been considered marriage counseling, into what can only be considered coarse, vulgar, and even lewd.

Who would have dreamed that one day evangelicals would form outreach to practicing homosexuals, such N.A.L.T.? (Not At all Like Them, in other words we are compassionate Christians who accept practicing homosexuals, and not at all like the anti gay Christians of old)!

This isn’t an outreach to get those struggling with the sin of homosexuality, rather it is an evangelical project to show empathy and acceptance of Gay, Lesbian and Transgender people, in the name of Jesus!

We are warned in the book of Revelation 13 that a time would come when the “Beast” would be allowed to “make war on the saints and to overcome them”. Jesus warned that “if possible, even the very elect would be decieved…”.

For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before.(Matthew 24:24-25)

Who would have ever imagined the mockery and denial of Hell in a christian church? Christian and Muslims worshipping together? Christian pastors apologizing for ‘judging’ homosexuals? Where does it end?

One wonders, wearily, What next? How could once thriving churches have possibly succumbed to such evil in the face of clear warning? What does this tell us about what to expect?

If it would have been unthinkable thirty years ago to predict that evangelical churches would seek peace and accommodation with Mosques, or would have outreach to encourage practicing homosexuals, what else remains unthinkable? What else is there to compromise, redefine, and explain away?

Evangelicals are currently being told that there is another side to the Israeli,Palestinian conflict, and that the compassionate stance is to take the side of the (so-called) Palestinians, and denounce Israel. (After all Israel is Western and we all know that is BAD,BAD,BAD!)!

Ever notice that the pastors and leaders who are leading so many in this accommodation to evil, are trying to come across as the “compassionate, understanding, responsible adult leaders”, as opposed to the other old-fashioned, judgmental evangelicals?

I predict that soon the time will come when some Evangelical leaders will again try to be the “compassionate, responsible adults” and counsel their sheep to go ahead and take the Mark of the Beast, that we shouldn’t worry about it, that life is not a Chick tract, and perhaps , that it would even be a good witness, showing the world that we christians,(at least not all of us) aren’t stuck on the negative interpretations of the Apocalypse that our evangelical forefathers once held.

Just remember this;  An angel of God himself will fly through the skies to warn men, that whoever takes that Mark for any reason whatsoever, is utterly and irrevocably damned.

Recieving the Mark is the  final accomodation to Evil. To take the Mark is in God’s sight, (That is the perspective that matters) an act of false worship, idolatry, and a taking of sides with  Evil against Truth and  Goodness, in the person of God and His Messiah, the Lamb, Jesus.

Long before the Mark of the Beast decision is thrust upon us, there are a thousand little decisions to confess or to deny Christ, and they are being made everyday by Christians around the world.Every accommodation to evil in the issues of our day, condition people, and even predispose them to succumb to the ultimate accomodation, and to commit the “Great transgression”.

The same reasoning that allows confessing Christians to accept the unacceptable now, will come into play in an ultimate sense then.We must prayerfully understand our times, our unique trials and pray to the Lord daily, “Lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from Evil!”.

Thank you so much for this article. I have been thinking the same exact things. As a matter of fact I recently watched a video my sister sent me from Brannon Howse of an interview he had with Jimmy DeYoung with them saying you can take the mark and still be saved. I was shocked to say the least. Made me sick to hear this when the Bible is clear in what it says. I was looking for this video on my email, but she sent it to me in November and I am still looking for it. Keep on telling the TRUTH.

  4. David J says:

Thank you for all your articles, I enjoy and learn from each. You write that an angel will fly through the skies to warn men about the mark of the beast; how/where is this stated in the bible? Also, the sermon says that if a person takes the mark of the beast he/she will be irrevocably damned. However, one could imagine that people may be branded against their will to have the mark of the beast applied to them. Would this force their damnation? I’m sure God has a plan to save these too.

    • M.K. says:

      Hi David,
I’m just a visitor, and your comment caught my attention, as your question stated:
“…You write that an angel will fly through the skies to warn men about the mark of the beast; how/where is this stated in the bible?…”
Clearly this is a very important question, and the best way to answer your question is by referring to Scripture itself, so I looked for verses that would apply to your question, and hopefully this will be helpful in regard to your inquiring about the angel that will “fly through the skies to warn men…”
The following is from Romans 14:6-11 (*note verse 9)
      6. And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
      7. Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
      8. And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
      9. And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
      10. The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
      11. And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

      God bless

Please note my TYPING ERROR :(, …I Meant to reference “Revelation 14:6-11,” (Not Romans 14:6:11). The verses are correct, I just accidentally typed Romans instead of Revelation.

  5. John MacArthur said that in September 1980 and GTY issued a “no recant” on John MacArthur’s 1980 statement back in October 2013 on their GTY Blog website.

  6. Eliza says:

What is interesting about MacArthur’s comment is the way that Phil Johnson defends it. He doesn’t refer to any passages in Revelation related to these verses in Revelation 14. Specifically Revelation 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

Notice how they did not receive the mark of the beast. Also receiving the mark of the best is closely tied to worship of the beast and of his image. Obviously those who reject faith in Jesus Christ will follow the beast. Also notice that these believers were beheaded for their testimony about Jesus Christ and their stand for the Word of God. Once the mark is taken there is no hope for repentance. Additionally, the judgments poured out upon the earth are different after the reign of the Antichrist then before, and the people do not repent under the judgment of God, but blaspheme Him. Again, once the mark of the beast, the Antichrist, is received there is no hope of repentance.
MacArthur has compromised with unbelievers for years. He quotes those who perpetrate false doctrine within the church without warning against their false teaching. Many admire the man, but my first hand experience with seeking encouragement from his preaching for a very difficult family matter and receiving only condemnation, and then, in contrast, finding life-giving hope inspiring encouragement from the Word of God which I listened to on CD on the way home, showed me in no uncertain terms where to go for God’s help. God the Holy Spirit used His Word to guide me and I am witnessing His working this difficulty out through trusting Him and His work. Hallelujah!

    • Eliza says:

Here is another example of how John MacArthur compromises with unbelievers.

      • Simon says:

Eliza, do you have a local church you attend and are you submitted to its pastor? Blessings, Simon.

      • Eliza says:

Does your pastor use a modern version to preach from? Does your pastor believe that we have today the inspired, inerrant, infallible Word of God? Does your pastor use context and the Bible when teaching and preaching God’s Word? Does he rely upon the Holy Spirit or the opinions of fallen men? Does your pastor warn you against the false teachers that have misled the church for hundreds of years, men like Augustine, Calvin, Luther and others? Does your pastor quote heretics from the pulpit when preaching the Bible? Does you pastor warn against false teachers today like C. S. Lewis, Billy Graham, James Dobson, Al Mohler, Rick Warren, Bill Hybles, and instruct those in the assembly why they are false teachers? Does your pastor exhibit the traits of a godly pastor fleshed out by Paul in 1 Thessalonians? We are commanded by God to be discerning and turn from those who do not hold to the faith and the truth of the Scriptures.

      • Simon says:

Eliza in answer to your questions:
        1. No
        2. Yes
        3. Yes
        4. Holy Spirit
        5. Yes
        6. No
        7. Yes, yes
        8. Yes, definitely

        So what was your point?

      • Eliza says:

Praise God for His mercy and grace to you! That is all I can say. We have tried to find a church where the pastor is committed to preaching and teaching the Word of God without compromise and without resorting to the opinions of men or the “latest and greatest” in the Christian church. Invariably, the pastor does not teach the Scriptures faithfully, is influenced by the mega-church mind, is influenced by false teachers, and/or isn’t concerned with the problems that surround modern versions. Where do you live? Maybe, if we are in the same area we could visit your church. God bless you:)

  7. Bob Randall says:

I am sorry for all of you, because I will be out of here before that happens according to 1st Thess.4:16-17

  8. Eliza says:

Praise God, yes! There will be opportunity to repent and believe the gospel during the tribulation. Those who do so will be saved and those who receive the mark of the beast will be eternally condemned. God bless you:)

  9. Simon says:

You see brother, what I tell you? Your readers are only interested in non-essential controversial things. Your devotional articles hardly draw 10% of the feedback you get on posts like false teachers and prophesy. How can you call your followers the living church remnant when they are not interested in spiritual growth and devotional christian living, but like to tickle their ears with criticism of high-profile preachers and arguments over Bible end-times prophecy? You are just the same as the so-called false prophets you claim are evil!

      • Simon says:

I only began to follow your blog since the events with Philip Powell. This issue has not been properly resolved as you folks made a private matter public, exposing your inner discussions to the world. Now a proper statement needs to be made on your position regarding Mr. Powell. Deleting blog posts and keeping silent is not enough. Because you have already opened the wound. So it was alright to make the problems public, and not the resolution? Is that the way you have been taught accountability? Having credit, but no debit? Either judge the matter openly, whether for or against Philip, or God will be the judge. In any case, I believe Philip will from henceforth no more share closely with you all and withdraw himself. His trust has been betrayed and he will have learnt his lesson.

      • billrandles says:

Simon, I only deleted my blog post at Philip’s request. In that Blog post I made quite clear my position on Philip Powell. I said I admire him, he is my friend and I do not regard him as a heretic, but as a real leader for Christ. I have not opened any wound, I have obly sought to reconcile and limit thedamage being done by two very strong, but very offended leaders in the body of Christ. God knows all of the facts and will judge acordingly- thanks for your interest in my writings-Pas Bill

    • Lillianna White says:

You are wrong. 1. You do not know what his readers are interested in and therefore cannot judge. 2. The fact that they would be interested in some non-essentials does not make them shallow. 3. We are to criticize and call out the wolves according to the bible. 4. That IS one of the essentials. 5. It IS spiritual growth and devotion to Christ among other things. 6. Ear tickling is for those who flock to heresy, like the heretics being called out for their heresy as we are called to do. 7. We ARE to be aware of end time bible prophesy and have been warned to KEEP WATCH and not be caught SLEEPING by none other than JESUS himself! Good morning! 8. Therefore that last insult applies to YOU instead… brother! 9. Or… are you one of those deceivers out there who is out to discourage discernment, watching, and calling out the wolves? Looks like it to me… !

Preach On Bill! Amen and God bless you!
BTW, I ran into that endorsing the mark of the beast thing too, John MacArthur and many others lately again, they are softening up the flock with their fuzzy devil-friendly heresy-mush.

    • Lillianna White says:

P.S. Did you realize, your label above now says….
      ‘Simon Says’? A bit ironic…
      Simon says… touch your toes… simon says… bark like a dog….
simon says… take the mark when the musicians play…
or we will throw you in the fiery furnace!
      (couldn’t resist that pun!)

      • Simon says:

Bill, it’s about time you put up another controversial article. I notice your articles lately has been getting zero comments. That’s not good for site traffic. Put out another article accusing a false minister, and trust me, the comments will come rolling on. Like this thread right here, it is never-ending. You got no interest on all your new articles in the last month or so. Even avid reader Lilliana is missing in action. Simon says, time for some hot news to satisfy the carnal Christians, of which you have many as followers. Sincerely, God bless. Simon.

      • Simon says:

And don’t accuse me of being a troll, Bill and company has been celebrity bashing for years. I am only threading water in comparison to the amount of accusations, controversies, anger and discontentment that they have spewed out over all these years. From people like Bill, Jacob and their cohorts. Simon says, Long live Philip Powell! 🙂

  10. John (Not Macarthur) Cochrane says:

GASP!!!! It appears that we can pass condemnation upon someone for teaching about something that has yet to happen!

I urge you to actually listen and read what people say before barraging them with the title “false teacher” or “compromiser”.
It is easy to come to a conclusion on one portion of scripture if we keep it in a vacuum of interpretation. Yet take the whole of scripture and see if you can still claim your understanding to be “inerrant” on your views of future events.

And Eliza, don’t just take a persons word that C.S. Lewis is a false teacher and that if anyone favorably quotes him it makes them a compromiser. Read Lewis for yourself and come to your own conclusion, then can you rightly stand on firm footing.

    • Eliza says:

Thanks for bringing that up. Actually, I spent a number of months corresponding with my former pastor about the false teaching the Lewis has written in his books. I cited passage, paragraph and page from the given books. The two books from which I quoted C. S. Lewis were Mere Christianity and The Problem of Pain. Additionally I cited a secondary source, “Christianity Today” which listed a number of false doctrines that Lewis believed and promoted. If you read my post Loyal Leadership, I quote C. S. Lewis from my own copy of Mere Christianity. I also wrote about Lewis in two other posts: Walking in the Light and Enduring Faith. Many leaders within evangelicalism will quickly point out the heresy of many, but if that same false doctrine was espoused by Lewis they will disobey the Lord and be “respecters of persons” and then excuse Lewis by saying he wasn’t a theologian. I’m not a theologian but I don’t believe or promote false teaching. Unlike Lewis I am a student of God’s Word and believe what He says about the Bible that it is His inspired, infallible, inerrant Word preserved for us. You can check out those posts if you chose. The fourth post chronicles the story of my salvation, growth in holding to the Bible and standing for the truth of God, in it I also talk about Lewis. God bless you:)

  11. John (Not Macarthur) Cochrane says:

The first part of the comment was directed at those sharpening their axes when bringing up John MacArthur, not at the main topic. Just FYI

  12. Eliza says:

John Cochrane, time frame is inconsequential, what is important is that we are faithful to the Scriptures. To suggest that it may be alright to take the mark of the beast, later repent and then believe that one will be forgiven is to contradict what is clearly taught in the Scriptures in the Book of Revelation. Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image. and whoever receives the mark of his name. Revelation 14:9-11 And I saw something like a sea of glass mingled with fire, and those who have the victory over the beast, over his image and over his mark and over the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, having harps of God. Revelation 15:2 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. Revelation 20:4 The coming of the lawless is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 These verses taken together prove that taking the mark of the beast is the result of unbelief and has as its just punishment eternal torment under the omnipotent condemnation of God. Obviously, John MacArthur taught this because his bulldog Phil Johnson trots out his defense and as a consequence twists the Scriptures, have they no fear of God Almighty?

  13. John Cochrane says:

My initial post was a bit of a knee-jerk reaction, so I will be less snarky so that I will not lose credibility.

There are a lot of accusations being thrown around against MacArthur. I will be up front so there is no confusion. I appreciate his ministry. I believe that he is one of the most solid Bible teachers we have. He will be the first to admit that he does not understand every single thing in the entire Bible and therefore does not claim infallibility. He, by the strength of the Spirit, has withstood attacks against many of his beliefs because he sincerely believes that what he teaches is taught in Scripture.

Now you (Eliza) come at this with sword unsheathed ready to lop off any head that would oppose your understanding of Scripture. You claim that the passage speaking of the Mark is so clear that none should get it wrong, and if they do they are “twisting” scripture. First thing to think of, which one of use doesn’t twist Scripture? We are still attached to this “Body of Death”(Romans 7:24), none of us fully understand nor see Christ as He truly is (1Cor 13:12, 1 John 3:2). So when it comes to doctrines of Last Things, than time is a factor. Right understanding of escholotolgy is important, but not to the point of us sinning against a brother/sister and labeling them “false teacher” “heretic” or “wolf”, which brings me to my next point.

Have you exhaustively studied Scripture to come to the conclusion on what constitutes a “false teacher” or a “wolf”? Those labels get thrown around a lot now days, just like the words “fascist” and “Marxist” without any real understanding of what actually constitutes such ideologies. No pastor/teacher who fears God want those labels attached, but those who claim they love God should also fear using those words when speaking of a Brother/Sister in Christ.

Last item for this comment, can you reconcile this passage,

    Mark 3:28-30
28 “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— 30 for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”

With the passage you continue to recite. Either they contradict each other, the Lord Jesus lied, or that even the sin of taking the Mark can be forgiven.

  14. John Cochrane says:

Just a quick post @Eliza, if you will deal equally with all “compromisers” when they talk favorably about your pet heretic (Lewis), the you need to stop coming to this site or call Bill Randles a compromiser as well.

    Kennedy, Huxley and Lewis…Nov 22,1963

  15. John Cochrane says:

@Eliza, may I recommend you actually listen, or read the transcripts, of Pastor MacArthur’s teachings on Revelation and tell me whether he has a fear of God.

Your responses are very uncharitable towards fellow believers and I would exhort you to read Scripture more on how we are to be with one another, even when we disagree. Let me just list a few.

Stimulate one another to love and good deeds (Heb 10:24)
Confess your sins to one another (James 5:16)
Build up one another (1 Thess 5:11)
Be of the same mind as one another (Romans 12:13, 15:5)
Comfort one another in the face of death (1 Thess 4:18)
Employ your spiritual gifts in serving one another (1 Peter 4:10)
Pray for one another (James 5:16)
Be devoted to one another (Romans 12:10)
Be at peace with one another (Mark 9:50)
Encourage one another (1 Thess 5:11)
Greet one another (2 Cor 13:12)
Don’t become boastful in challenging one another (Gal 5:26)
Be kind to one another (Eph 4:32)
Abound in love for one another (1 Peter 1:22)
Live in peace with one another (1 Thess 5:13)
Love one another (2 John 5)
Fervently love one another (1 Peter 1:22)
Have fellowship with one another (1 John 1:7)
Don’t judge one another (Romans 14:13)
Take communion (the Lord’s Table) with one another (1 Cor 11:33)
    Accept one another (Romans 15:7)
Regard one another as more important than yourself (Phil 2:3)
Bear one another’s burdens (Gal 6:2)
    Admonish one another (Rom 15:14)
    Serve one another (Gal 5:13)
Do not lie to one another (Col 3:9)
Bear with one another (Col 3:13)
    Forgive one another (Col 3:13)
Teach and admonish one another (Rom 15:14)
Care for one another (1 Cor 12:25)
Cloth yourselves with humility toward one another (1 Peter 5:5)
Be hospitable to one another (1 Peter 4:9)
Do not complain against one another (James 5:9)
Show forbearance to one another (Eph 4:2)
Speak to one anther in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs (Eph 5:19)
Give preference to one another (Rom 12:10)
Don’t bite and devour one another (Gal 5:15)
Submit to one another (Ephesians 5:21
Seek the good of one another (1 Thess 5:15)
Don’t forsake assembling with one another (Heb 10:25)

Now, if you want to claim MacArthur is a heretic, or false teacher or a wolf, then you have other issues that you need to address.

  16. Eliza says:

Hi John, There you go again assuming that I haven’t read the information that I am writing against. Of course, I have read the transcripts of what he said and what Phil Johnson said to defend him. MacArthur is a compromiser of the Christian faith. He promotes false teachers. He cavorts with those who deny the doctrines of the Scriptures and refers to these heretics in his messages. Just because I warn others about the compromise of John MacArthur doesn’t mean that I am not practicing the other graces that we are called to uphold. How would you know? You don’t even know me.
I can warn against MacArthur because of his public teaching. Compromise spreads apostasy. We must fear God and contend earnestly for the faith. Twisting Scripture indicates one does not fear God. I have had other interactions with both John MacArthur and Phil Johnson that have proven to me their insincerity when standing for the truth of God’s Word, along with the fact that John MacArthur has praised and promoted false teachers (try Jack Hayford pastor of Church on the Way who claimed to see Christ and receive revelation from Him).
Didn’t Jesus vigorously rebuke those religious leaders who contradicted the Scriptures? Doesn’t the Scripture categorically denounces and condemns all false teachers. Who are we to throw off this example and do as we please?

    • John Cochrane says:

What this truly sounds like is a personal vendeta against MacArthur and those who work with him. Granted, I have made some assumptions about you. You claim to have read his stuff, and since I do not know you, I will “assume” you are telling the truth. Yet, you throw out words like “compromise”, “heretics” without BIBLICALLY defining those terms. Refer to one of my last posts in which I asked you to show from Scripture what defines someone as a “false teacher” and “heretic”. For to label someone such things without rightly understanding what constitutes the label is to break the 9th Commandment of “Though shalt not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

As for you to bring up Jesus and talk about how He delt with the false teachers of His day is to be woefully undecerning on our own abilities. Why could Jesus address the false teachers in the way He did? Becasue of John 2:23-25

“23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.”

Jesus is the ONLY one who knows the heart of man. It is Christ alone who can decern motives or intentions. All we, as fallible man can do is judge words and deeds. So you come at MacArthur and the like, claim them false teachers or heretics, which in Scripture equates to a false Christian, and that settles the matter. Yet MacArthur preaches salvation by; Grace alone, through Faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone. How often I have heard him preach on the sufficiency of Scripture. How often has he spoken out against the false teaching of the Charismatic movement, which includes Jack Hyford. You need to learning what it means to be part of the Body of Christ, and how it is we are to be with one another, for you are casting out anathemas against others and setting yourself in the place of God.

Read this very carefully, I am NOT saying that MacArthur is above reproach. I am NOT saying that everything he says doesn’t need to be examined by Scripture. What I AM saying is you have a false idea of seperation, and a very weak understanding of what it truly means to “Contend for the faith.”

I would also like to ask, who is your Pastor? Do you have a local church under whose authority you sit? What is their website and do they record their teachings?

      In Christ

  17. John Cochrane says:

“Error, indeed, is never set forth in its naked deformity, lest, being thus exposed, it should at once be detected. But it is craftily decked out in on attractive dress, so as, by its outward form, to make it appear to the inexperienced (ridiculous as the expression may seem) more true than truth itself.” Irenaeus Against Heresies 1.2

The word “heresy” comes from the Greek hairesis which means “choosing,” or “faction.” At first, the term heresy did not carry the negative meaning it does now. But, as the early church grew in its scope and influence throughout the Mediterranean area, various teachers proposed controversial ideas about Christ, God, salvation, and other biblical themes. It became necessary for the church to determine what was and was not true according to the Bible. For example, Arius of Alexandar (320 AD) taught that Jesus was a creation. Was this true? Was this important? Other errors arose. The Docetists taught that Jesus wasn’t human. The Modalists denied the Trinity. The Gnostics denied the incarnation of Christ. Out of necessity, the church was forced to deal with these heresies by proclaiming orthodoxy. And in so doing, condemnation upon these heresies and the heretics became a reality.

Unfortunately, some of those who attempted to defend and establish the truth did so by killing those who disagreed with them. What would prompt such hostile actions against those who merely had “differences of opinion” on biblical subjects? The answer may not ever be fully known, but I offer this explanation.

Culturally, when Christianity arose, it arose in the midst of a hostile environment. Judaism and the Roman Empire both warred against its people and its teaching. Persecutions arose and Christians were killed for their faith. In the Diaspora (dispersion) of the late first century, Christians were scattered throughout the Mediterranean area due to the persecutions in Israel. The Roman Empire with its theology of many gods was not friendly to Christianity’s monotheism. Therefore, Christians were further persecuted.

Theologically, the Bible teaches condemnation upon false doctrines and false teachers. Gal. 1:8-9 says, “But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed” (NASB). See also 1 Cor. 16:22; 2 Cor. 11:13-15; 1 Tim. 1:18-20; Titus 3:10. Why is this taught in the Bible? The reason is simple. Christians are saved by faith in the work of Jesus on the cross. But faith in itself is not enough. Faith is not a substance you can put in a jar. It is belief in something. Faith is only as good as who it is placed in. If you put your faith in a false God, you are lost because a false god cannot save anyone. This is why God says in Exodus 20:3, “You shall have no other gods before Me.” Faith is not what saves, but faith in the true God is what saves.

I suspect that it is a combination of the cultural and theological contexts that resulted in Christians seeking to “do away with” the heretics. Heresy has the ability to damn because they have the ability to confuse the gospel sufficiently to make it powerless. For this reason, I suspect that to many ancient Christians, heresy became one of the most serious of offenses.

    Essential verses nonessential

It becomes necessary to define those doctrines which separate Christian from non-Christian. It would make no sense to persecute anyone over a doctrine that is not essential to the faith. Such nonessentials, in my opinion, would include baptism of infants, pre or post-trib rapture, worship on Saturday or Sunday, musical instruments in the church, the charismatic gifts, worship styles, dress codes, etc. These kinds of subjects do not affect one’s salvation. Unfortunately, the disagreements that arise around these subjects result in denominational fragmentation.

Essentials of the faith would include who God is, who Jesus is, salvation by grace, and Jesus’ resurrection. From these subjects we have derived doctrines known as the Trinity and the hypostatic union (Jesus’ two natures: God and man). The Bible tells us that these doctrines concerning God, Christ, salvation, and resurrection are essential to the faith. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that Christians know their faith and know how to defend it against the doctrines that compromise the essentials.

  18. Eliza says:

Thank you for writing back to me. I have no personal vendetta against John MacArthur and his staff. I don’t have to see someone’s heart in order to judge whether or not they promote false teaching or compromise by promoting false teachers. All I have to do is observe their teaching. I intimated this when I referred to the public nature of MacArthur’s teachings. I have read many of MacArthur’s books, listened to him for years and attended his church when in Southern California. Based upon these interactions with MacArthur and interaction with Phil Johnson I know that they are not zealous for the truth. I know this because MacArthur quotes from false teachers and doesn’t warn against these false teachers. Case in point: MacArthur quotes C. S. Lewis and doesn’t warn others that Lewis taught heresy. Lewis believed in and taught baptismal regeneration, purgatory, auricular confession, prayers for the dead, that those who do not know Christ as Savior and Lord can be saved by Him, that Jesus didn’t take our punishment when He died for us on the cross, that mankind is not depraved, he rejected the truth that the Scriptures are the inerrant, infallible, inspired Word of God, he considered the historical account of Genesis to be a “good myth”, and believed in theistic evolution. As a matter of fact, John MacArthur quotes Lewis three times in his book, Hard to Believe, even though he warns against those who taught the very thing that Lewis believed and taught which is that people can be saved and belong to God without conscious faith in Jesus Christ. This is gross compromise and allows a false teacher to have influence within the church. Why does MacArthur do this? I can’t see John’s heart but I do know that Lewis is extremely popular with many evangelicals, and perhaps MacArthur is concerned with rankling those who consider him to be a good Bible teacher.

I had an in-depth email conversation with Phil Johnson regarding Lewis where I asserted that I believed everything that Lewis believed and taught. Johnson rebuked me but refused to expose Lewis as a false teacher. He, along with many, excused Lewis by saying he wasn’t a theologian, but does one really need to be a theologian to know, believe, and understand the truth of the Scriptures? No, we need to be born again and have the Holy Spirit indwelling us Who reveals the truth to us as His beloved children. Again, this compromise allows a false teacher to influence the church, which dishonors God and leads many astray.

i had a face to face conversation with a young man who was the friend of my son and graduated from Master’s College with a degree in Bible, and he told me that we can’t know for sure what the Bible says. This statement is completely contrary to what the Scriptures have to say. This is the fruit of a biblical education from that college. We should have greater certainty about what the Bible says rather than less after we have studied the Bible.

You referred to the counsels, the Greek derivation of the word, the church and Scripture when giving the definition of heresy. We really only need to consider Scripture when defining heresy, and basically it is anything that disagrees with what God has clearly declared in His Word the Bible. I notice that you didn’t include the work that Jesus Christ did for us, nor did you include the doctrine regarding Scripture when deciding what are important doctrines for us to fight for. The doctrines that you presented could easily be attested to by many who reject the biblical doctrines for these teachings. The bare-boned essentials of the faith that you put forth can be attested to by Protestants and Catholics. This gives a large ecumenical community that can and will be the basis for the end time harlot church. You also did not include the doctrine of Creation. Again, this will allow for many who disagree with the Scriptures on many doctrines to be considered a part of the church and so be a part of the corrupt end time harlot church.

Teaching that promotes heresy or supports heretics declares what is in the heart of those who do so. “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. Luke 6:45 The fact that MacArthur condemns those who teach heresy and then promotes a heretic shows that his intentions are not directed by the Holy Spirit. You would do better to fight for the faith once for all delivered to the saints that fight for a man who has dubious intentions.

    • John Cochrane says:

      I had this loooooong post I had already typed out. I was addressing some of your points in your last post and realized we are spinning our wheels. Your entire argument is based upon the people someone quotes. That is a very poor rational to slander a brother/sister in Christ. Your logic goes;
I heard “A” quote “B” in sermon/book, and I know from all my extensive studies that “B” is a heretic therefore I must conclude that “A” supports ALL that person ever said even the bad stuff, so I will label “A” a compromiser.

I believe we hold the truth up equally, yet I fear that you are becoming like the Ephesians in Revelation 2:2 “2 “‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. 3 I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary. 4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.”

Jesus commended them for striving to uphold truth, yet what we see is that they no longer loved and that Jesus even warns of removing their lampstand. Love is to define our Christian walk, our love for God, yes. But also I love for one another. I did begin getting wrapped up in defending MacArthur, but not because I don’t think he could ever be wrong, but because I know where your line of reasoning leads. It leads to a fellow Christian who will not fellowship for fear of being tainted all the while tainting those whom they love into fearing the church.
Now, as far as your claims of interaction with Phil Johnson and MacArthur, and also with the young man from the Masters College, I do not believe you. I believe you are distorting truth so as to prove a point, or for shock value and I call you to repent. You can go on to The Masters Seminary or Master College website and watch actual lectures/classes and you will hear them teach the sufficiency of Scripture. You can go to GTY and listen to every single teaching on the Literal 6 day creation, or Sufficiency of Scripture or whatever other supposed grip you have against MacArthur. All your condemnation of a fellow Christian boils down to is YOUR own standards, not God’s and for that you are no better than the pope usurping the authority of Christ and passing judgments upon those that simply do not agree with YOU. You could care less of what Scripture says, for if you did, you would strive to understand other believers and not merely relish in your own understanding.
One last note. By Biblical standards, ALL Christians unintentionally hold some form of heretical views, becasue of our fallen state we cannot comprehend all truth nor claim perfect understanding. But there is a vast gulf between a heresy and heretic. Arius was a heretic because he denied the nature of Christ. So was Pelagius, for he denied the doctrine of original sin and that all are born “dead in trespasses and sin”. The pope is a heretic, for he usurps the Headship of Christ and speaks Ex-Cathedra, he leads millions astray through works righteousness or transubstantiation. Joel Osteen… I don’t even know where to start. Or Rob Bell with his universalism. These are heretics that Jude, Peter and the likes warned us about.

Know what, we can continue this discussion, but I believe that it will never end. If you are in a local church, I feel pity for your pastor, for you expect him to live up to a standard that you yourself cannot live up to. If you are not, then repent and bring yourself under the authority and teaching of a faithful man and maybe you will learn what it means to be a member of the Body of Christ.

  19. Eliza says:

We must fear God and obey Him rather than being respecters of persons.

  20. Eliza says:

For someone who is supposedly controlled by love, that was a very vicious attack. I spoke nothing but the truth whether you believe it or not; whether you choose to call me a liar or know that I am a faithful witness. True love for God and for His children means that we expose those who oppose sound doctrine and the truth of the Scriptures. I don’t know if you have been aware of this fact, but there are countless false teachers abounding within the church right now leading many astray, making them captives by their false teaching and leading them to hell. Do you care about that? I do and so does God! What is the fountainhead of this apostasy? It starts with those who reject the inerrancy, inspiration, and infallibility of the Scriptures and places man’s opinions and ideas above the clear teaching of God’s Word. Most times, these false teachers will feign a reverence for the Scriptures, but will all the while be undermining the doctrines clearly expressed in the Scriptures. That is happening in spades throughout the visible church right now, and C. S. Lewis is one who did just that along with many others!.

Another aspect of the spread of false teaching is compromise with false teachers by quoting and promoting them. You don’t even care that Lewis was a rank heretic and MacArthur blithely quotes him without any warning regarding his heresy. Following Lewis has led to the demise of many. One such person is Peter Kreeft who at one time was a member of the Dutch Reformed church, but under the tutelage of Lewis, as he testifies, he left that church for the Catholic church and then Kreeft wrote a book that centered on universalism, The Ecumenical Jihad. Don’t you care that this man swallowed the poison of Lewis and then spread that vile doctrine abroad leading many to embrace a doctrine that condemns one to hell? MacArthur, along with many others, refuse to expose the heresy of the heretic C. S. Lewis and warn believers to stand fast for the faith once for all delivered to the saints, and contend for the doctrine that accords with the Scriptures and that results in godliness. Instead MacArthur approvingly quotes this false teacher and joins in with the deception of Lewis and is responsible for giving the devil the opportunity to deceive God’s children. It is not a small thing to be working with Satan in the matter of deception.

What are you doing? Are you promoting the deceit of the devil by your ungodly attack and refusal to examine everything by the light of the Scriptures and hold fast to the good and reject what is evil? Are you like so many, MacArthur included, who refuse to obey God’s clear command in Scriptures to have nothing to do with those who cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which you learned and avoid them? Are you dividing from me, a true believer in Jesus Christ, because you are more interested in a false unity that centers on rejecting biblical discernment and listening to the lies of men? We must not center our faith upon people but upon the living God who richly provides all things for us through His Son Jesus Christ. We must not give heed to the opinions and false doctrines of men which have their origins in the darkness of the evil one, we must study the Scriptures to show ourselves approved, rightly dividing the Word of truth. Instead of falsely condemning me, why don’t you pray to God and ask Him to reveal to you if what I am saying is the truth and if it is, then what He wants you to do about it.

Lastly, I have the email documentation that verifies everything that was said by Johnson and me. Try this, go to any discernment ministry and voice your concern about Lewis and see what they say. Write to Johnson and see what he says about Lewis. Just check it out. You will see that they will all make excuses for Lewis, but will not out and out expose him as a false teacher and warn against reading his books. Additionally, they will call out others who promote the very same heresy that Lewis promoted, but they will make excuses for Lewis saying that he wasn’t a theologian. They are respecters of persons, which God clearly condemns. When Peter strayed concerning the faith Paul rightly reproved him in front of all. Remember, Lewis’ estate generates millions for the book companies and the entertainment industry. I pray that God blesses you and opens your eyes to see and know what is happening within the visible church today.

Here is a link that exposes much of the error that has been the hallmark of MacArthur.

Simon I am sorry for you that you are so embittered, that you feel the need to judge my motives,(You say I use controversy and personal attack to stir up web traffic to my blog). You couldn’t be further from the truth, And God knows that. I forgive you and hope you will repent of your bitterness.I too wish nothing less than “Long live Philip Powell” whom I count as a friend and even a mentor. Please get rid of your personal bitterness and quit spewing bile on other people through my blog! (I John 1:9)

Thanks Eliza. I assume from your answer that you don’t.
